On June 12, Toronto Metropolitan University Libraries will launch OMNI, an academic search tool designed to bring library search and service functions together to provide a seamless, one-stop search experience for users.
Simply Map now offers enhanced Canadian census data!
“Due to changes in methodology, Statistics Canada is not officially releasing dissemination area (DA) data from the 2011 NHS [National Household Survey], which replaced the long-form census. CensusPlus offers enhanced data for the most important NHS themes for all DAs in Canada, fills in missing values and eliminates random rounding in both NHS and Census data. The result is a comprehensive set of demographic variables available for any geographic level — be it standard census and postal geographies or custom client trade areas.” (Environics Analytics, 2014) Read more…
RULA sends warmest congratulations to Ryerson President Sheldon Levy, who was honoured on Monday with the Egerton Ryerson Award for Dedication to Public Education. From People for Education:
The Egerton Ryerson Award is presented annually to a person or persons who have been both active and public in their advocacy for strong public education. The award recognizes the deep value of learning – from the early years until graduation from high school, and those who have made the connection between strong public education, social cohesion, and strong and engaged societies.
While attending the gala, RULA’s Chief Librarian Madeleine Lefebvre had the chance to talk to the Honourable Bill Davis, former Premier of Ontario (see photo, right). Mr Davis was on hand as a member of the awards committee to pay tribute to President Levy and chatted with Madeleine about the Library and the soon-to-be opened Student Learning Centre.
President Levy has been a tireless supporter of the library throughout his tenure as Toronto Metropolitan University’s President. Our heartfelt congratulations on your recognition!
The Library is pleased to report the addition of more than two hundred monographs and pamphlets by way of a private donation. This donation brings the Library’s holdings to over 3,700 books, pamphlets, DVDs and video recordings relating to the Caribbean.
For additional tips on finding Caribbean Studies resources at RULA, check out the guide for CHST222: History of the Caribbean and the general Caribbean Studies Guide. Our staff in the Geospatial, Map and Data Centre have been busy developing a new and improved website! Please take some time to familiarize yourself with the new format and content, which was strongly influenced by user feedback. The new site has been organized to provide easier access to our three major collections: Geospatial Data & GIS resources, our Paper Map Inventory, and the Statistics & Data resources available through the Library. We encourage you to provide feedback about the new site through this blog, or visit us in the GMDC, located on the main floor of the Library, at the north end! We hope to see you soon.
Got questions about the Student Learning Centre? The recently launched SLC blog is a hub of information about the SLC for Ryerson students and community.

The following report provides details about Ryerson’s usage of the direct borrowing agreement with the University of Toronto Libraries (UTL). This agreement allows Ryerson faculty, staff and graduate students to borrow directly from UTL Libraries. The report includes statistics such as the number of borrowers, usage by department, and some analysis of borrowed titles.
Presented on the occasion of WorldPride 2014 in Toronto, To See and Be Seen features t-shirts from the Canadian Lesbian and Gay Archives (CLGA) from the 1970s onwards, representing the fight for visibility and recognition of lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and queer (LGBTQ) communities. These t-shirts, from organizations such as ACT UP, Queer Nation and local LGBTQ Pride events, demonstrate a range of messages from expressions of identity, political and social struggles, to the celebration of community, love and pride.
Guest curated by Professor Joseph Medaglia from Ryerson’s School of Fashion, this exhibition is produced in collaboration with the CLGA, the Toronto Metropolitan University Library and Archives (RULA) and is supported by the Textile Museum of Canada and the School of Fashion.
We’re pleased to announce the creation of the Phyllis Yaffe Library Innovation Student Scholar for 2014-15. This position honours the contributions of Phyllis Yaffe, a former librarian, who will soon complete her term as the university’s Board Chair. Funded by the Provost’s Office, a one-year, part-time internship has been created for a third or fourth year student to work closely with the Library and Information Technology Services (LITS) team and other library units to enhance digital literacy at Ryerson, and engage in innovative initiatives related to e-learning and zone learning.
Students are invited to bring their own versatile, creative and entrepreneurial strategies to the position. Recent student employees in LITS have been involved in web application development and mobile app development such as Ryerson Mobile and the RULA MAPS app.
We look forward to the contributions of the Phyllis Yaffe Library Innovation Student Scholar in the coming academic year, and thank both Ms. Yaffe and the Provost for their support of this initiative.
More information on this upcoming opportunity will be available in the near future.
