Official Opening of the Ryerson Academic Computing Information Centre, 1983

computing-300x184_watermarkedThanks to a $3.7 million contribution of hardware and software from IBM Canada and grants of nearly $2 million from both the federal and provincial governments for additional equipment and renovations, Ryerson opened its state-of-the-art Academic Computing Information Centre on October 18, 1983. Seen in this photograph, at the front from the left, are Dr. Bette Stephenson, Minister of Colleges and Universities, Dr. Brian Segal, Ryerson President, the Honourable William Davis, Premier of Ontario and Mr. Lorne Lodge, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IBM Canada. In addition to this and other photographic images, the Archives maintains a cassette sound recording of the proceedings, a commemorative brass plaque and assorted news clippings relating to this event. A 1982 study on the Institute’s academic computing needs, which led to the establishment of the Centre, can also be found in the Archives. (Collection Record 122.10.60)
