Norman Jewison and Ryerson

This is a photograph of the members of the Film and Photography (now Image Arts) Advisory Committee in the mid-1980s, including famed Canadian film producer and director, Norman Jewison (at the front, second from right). Mr. Jewison forged several links to Ryerson University over the years, mainly through the donation of a $25,000 scholarship fund for senior film students and the receipt of a fellowship in 1986. Interestingly, he also had a much earlier connection to Ryerson when as a youth, he attended the Toronto Normal-Model School, which was established by the University’s namesake, Egerton Ryerson, the founder of Ontario’s educational system, on the site where Ryerson sits today. Professor Elvino Sauro donated this photograph, as well as various technological artifacts, films and files, to the Ryerson University Archives upon his retirement in 1998. He is pictured at the back, to the left of Mr. Jewison.
