Before You Submit to the RULA Digital Repository

Accessibility Considerations

To conform to basic accessibility for all readers, including those using adaptive technology, we request that your document includes image descriptions and has “selectable” text.

  • Image Descriptions: Image descriptions are textual summaries of graphic elements (photos, graphs, charts, images) that are embedded into documents. Adaptive technology applications read the descriptions when encountering a graphic element. This is especially useful for users with visual impairments
  • Selectable text: Selectable text means that when you’re viewing the document in an application, you can select the text, then copy and paste it in to a new document. Non-selectable text or unrecognized text is an impediment to accessibility. It poses a problem for users of certain adaptive software such as text-to-speech applications

The Ryerson Library offers two online services to enhance the accessibility of your Digital Repository submission:

  • An image description submission form to facilitate the addition of image descriptions
  • An online OCR (Optical Character Recognition) tool which renders the text machine-readable

Please proceed through the pre-submission steps by answering the following questions.

a) Does your document contain images?

YES – Please use our image description submission form

NO – Please proceed to (b)

b) Is your document a scanned, image-based file or does it have non-selectable text?

YES – Please use our Online OCR service to rectify this

NO – An online submission form is currently being developed. In the meantime, please contact Brian Cameron to have your document included in the Digital Repository.
